I have never been to Morocco, but Felix has really captured the potential challenges – both comical and not so comical – when traveling in a foreign land. To a Westerner Morocco can appear exotic and this is captured in the collection of stories. The author adeptly conveys his fear, anxiety, humor and curiosity as he travels with friends and fellow tourists. I felt as if I was there with him as he interacted with the shadowy characters on the crowded bus rides, and as he & cohorts made the sweaty ascension of the desert dunes. Do you want a Moroccan adventure? If so, then read “With Open Arms” by Matthew Felix. You will feel a little bit more worldly when you are done!

I couldn’t put this down!!! Matthew’s descriptions of events are so vivid that I felt like I was there with him. Despite some tense situations and his strong apprehensions, I was pleased to see his feelings about this amazing country and its people.

Very interesting stories of Mr. Felix’s experiences in Morocco. He writes excellent!

I was a little apprehensive reading it because it’s not the typical book I normally read. But once I got into it, I couldn’t put it down. Extremely entertaining accounts of actual experiences.

This is a must-have book! Mr. Felix writes with such passion and a style that paints a vivid picture allowing the reader to tap into their many senses (sights, sounds, smells) as well as their emotions. Along with educating me about the many challenges traveling abroad, I felt I was with him as each storysituation unfolded. I was actually feeling what he was feeling and putting myself in his place and thinking what I’d do in those situations. Without divulging too much information, when you read his massage story, you’ll live it and wonder how he survived that ordeal and have second thoughts about getting a message in Morocco. I’m looking forward to reading more stories from this creative author.

I found myself not being able to put down the book. Each story has its own feelings and experiences which kept me hooked throughout the whole book. Events and emotions are well described. My heart was racing multiple times while reading because I could feel what the author must have felt. I highly recommend this book to those who like crazy con artist stories and a good sense of humor.

Very engrossing, easy read. I read it with relish in half of one day.

This exciting account of Matt’s personal travels & the mishaps he endured in exotic locations was a quick and easy read. Very enjoyable!!!

I found myself captivated by these stories which immersed me in unfamiliar landscapes with poignancy, humor and admiration for the bravery of Matthew Félix to embrace the unknown. The writing is vivid and engaging. It’s a fresh take on travel writing. A wonderful read!

What a fun book! I’ve enjoyed reading Matthew’s blogs on occasion and watching podcasts/videos of his travels, so being able to read this book of misadventures was a special treat. Well, I admit that it was hard to hear about some of the more challenging situations he endured (no Turkish baths, sand dunes or big spiders for me), but like other readers, I couldn’t wait to finish “With Open Arms”. In fact, we had a tornado-like storm that left us without power for 31 hours. Having already gotten hooked on the book, I thought, “I’ll be darned if an electric outage is going to stop me from hearing what else happened to him in Morocco.” With a stand-up flashlight to my left, and a handheld to my right, I felt like a teenager reading under the covers after mom had already told me lights out.Matthew has a knack for writing as if he were talking to you, and that’s my preference. Special thanks for helping me spend $10 for a great book that will save me thousands of travel dollars–I will definitely NOT be planning a trip to Morocco in THIS lifetime!

Incredible book. The best part about reading a book about travels feeling like you are there, and this is the ultimate in armchair travel. Reading Felix’s stories I could see what he saw and smell what he smelled. I felt his fear and skepticism. I felt the bubbling laughter and the awe at the sights and sounds. I love the way he writes and can’t wait to read more!

Beautifully written account of Matthews’ amusing and often unbelievable experiences traveling throughout Morocco. It seems a bit insensitive to laugh at these accounts, but I’m guessing humor is the only thing that got the author through them! Mr. Felix’s writing is phenomenal, providing incredibly vivid depictions of the scenery and sounds that I felt like I was right there with him. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a brief and rollicking escape from the ordinary.

With Open Arms is a tasty and intriguing combination of grit, charm and snark. Matthew Felix captures the beautiful, the wild, the bizarre and the mundane with equal skill. As I read, I kept being reminded of Dickens for the vividness of description and how strangeness can be found in the most normal of everyday situations. Looking forward to more from Matthew Felix!

This book is very well written that I had to finish it in one afternoon. You will feel like you were along for the trip. Get your passports ready for this exciting journey!

I found this to be an incredibly enjoyable read – misadventures is a great description as the author brings you along a host of experiences that will have you bursting into laughter – many of the stories contain themes universal to most international travelers – the awkward and challenging arrival, the unforgettable train journey, harassment by locals – it goes on. Reading this makes me want to get up and travel to another country and experience adventure all over again although based on Matthew’s experience – I’m not sure whether I’m quite ready for Morocco! A great read – I’d highly recommend this to anyone visiting a new country and travelling a little into the unknown. A great way to get you ready and psyched for a new adventure or misadventure!

I had so much fun and curiousity following the stories, especially because, on one hand I know Matthew personally and how he talks in real, which is pretty much the spirited way, he is writing, which I just had the pleasure to learn to know with this, his first book. And on the other hand, not being a native english person, I found so many funny, nice and to me new formulations, that I feel so enriched and at the same time very much entertained by the content of the stories. Thank you so much! Curious for the next one to come!

I had an exciting trip to Morocco through the detailed descriptions Matthew wrote in his book, With Open Arms. I could feel his heart pounding in many of the situations he had to deal with. I have heard of turkish baths but never knew what actually happened to a person. Matthew’s story of his “bath” took care of any idea I had of ever enjoying one! Well written, enjoyable, filled with suspense, and educational. Write on Matthew.

I’m a great fan of Bill Bryson’s books, and Matthew Felix captured some of that charm and wit in his book, With Open Arms: Short Stories of Misadventures. Matt, however, added a bit of suspense that kept me awake reading into the night. I felt like I was right there in Tangiers with him. Definitely a very good read!

Vivid descriptions of people and places put me right in the middle of the stories….I’ve never been to Morocco but I feel as though I have! The author gives a real sense of the immensity of the desert and the crowded, hectic marketplaces. His stories are sometimes hilarious, sometimes horrifying, but always entertaining. I was sorry to reach the end!

Abook full of humor and irony, where no one is spared: the Moroccans, the taxi drivers, the awful French tourists, the Americans… I loved the author’s descriptions of landscapes, which I found rendered homage to Morocco, a country I’ve never visited. The reader feels the ambiance and incongruity of certain scenes, the moments where doubt overwhelms. I had a great time reading these stories!

A delightful, easy read (well, sometimes—see below!) focused nominally on Morocco—albeit a Morocco very different than that which I have seen. For Felix, Morocco serves primarily as the setting for a series of vignettes observing very human reactions to very stressful circumstances. Throughout this short book, the author’s love of life, love of humanity, and sometimes startling and almost childlike innocence is on full view, and illuminated by Felix’ near poetic phrasing and delight in the use of language.Occasionally the author’s innocence borders on gullibility, and pushed me as a reader to a position similar to that which we used to experience with horror movies when the girl in the midst of the storm on a dark night suggests to her boyfriend that they take shelter in the old mansion visible from the road. I always wanted to yell “DON’T DO THAT!” And in several of these stories I squirmed and wanted desperately to be able to yell that same warning to Matthew, most notably as he approached the Turkish Bath in Morocco. Those uncomfortable moments were more than outweighed by the glimpses of the overpowering majesty of the desert revealed in The Dunes, and the irrepressible love of life and people demonstrated by his indomitable will to get back to his feet and try to believe in his fellow man after being deceived and betrayed yet again. It is impossible not to love and cheer for both the man and his stories. I commend this book to all.

Matthew is becoming one of my favorite travel writers. He has the ability to really put his reader on location – his writing is clean, humorous, insightful and well paced. His fearless curiosity about the World is infectious and I can’t wait to read about his next journey. My wife and I (believe it or not!) are now planning our first trip to Morocco. Next up, shop a money belt…

I had to laugh, when I saw that one reviewer was planning a trip to Morocco, based on this book. Not me! I will say, however, that I thoroughly enjoyed the virtual trip that I took, thanks to Felix’s stories. Funny, suspenseful, and very entertaining.

As a fellow traveler, I found this book conveyed the excitement, frustration and trepidation many travelers feel when experiencing cultures so different from our own. I thought the author was very brave in writing an honest account of his time in Morocco. His disappointing encounters were juxtaposed with encouraging ones and I could almost feel the dissonance this caused. The author’s misadventures were at times harrowing (the taxi-driver!!), but were told with a sense of humor and lightness. I was sad when the book came to and end and would love to continue to reading his stories.

I really enjoyed this book. I don’t read too often and get bored easily but this book really captivated me. Each story was vivid and told in a way that was engaging without dragging on or with too many words. Some of the stories could easily be turned into movies.. I finished the book with enjoyment, wanting more and wondering how the characters are doing now – if they will be traveling to morocco again. I can feel the vibrancy of this culture and am interested to know more about it. Well done! Looking forward to more books by Mathew. Two thumbs up. Susan – Redwood City CA

The stories of the author’s misadventures in Morocco resonate with anyone who has traveled there. I have fortunately also met wonderful people in my travels. But any visitor would do well to read and absorb the lessons. There are also wonderful descriptions of the cities and countries side, and of course of that magical sand dunes of the south.

Unexpectedly funny and lighthearted.

Well written stories that should be read by everyone who plans on travelling to Morocco. Sadly, there are a lot of scammers who prey upon everyone. As a woman who has been to Morocco multiple times, I wouldn’t encourage other women to visit Morocco without a male companion. Their customs and views of women are very different than those of Americans and Europeans.
